An articulation delay means a child is substituting one or two sounds and the error is typical in normal development.

An articulation disorder means the child is substituting sounds that are not typical in normal speech development.

There is a strong correlation between a moderate-severe speech disorders and reading difficulties.

Always check a child’s hearing with a trained audiologist, to eliminate any  physical cause for the speech delay/disorder.

A speech pathologist assesses and treats

receptive language (understanding of language) and expressive language (spoken language)

A language delay is the failure to develop language at the expected time. A child may present with receptive language delay, expressive language delay, or both.

If you are a skilled reader, it is easy to forget the difficult journey of learning to read.

I am Spalding trained and am very passionate about teaching children to read and spell.

Speech Pathologists are skilled in identifying your child’s exact areas of difficulty and tailoring specific goals for your child’s needs.

PHONOLOGICAL AWARENESS

Stuttering is a speech motor coordination disorder. Your child may present with word or sound repetitions, prolongations (dragging out the sounds in words) or blocks (where the words appear to get stuck).

Your child may also present with tics or facial grimaces.

The exact cause of stuttering is unknown. A family history of stuttering often exists. Some children may recover without intervention. Unfortunately, there is no way of predicting who will recover naturally.

I am trained in the Lidcombe Program which is a behavioural program for children who are younger than 6 years. It may also be suitable for older children.

Auditory processing disorder (APD), also known as central auditory processing disorder (CAPD), is a complex problem affecting about 5% of school-aged children.

Some children are unable to process the information they hear in the same way as others because their ears and brain don't fully coordinate. Something adversely affects the way the brain recognises and interprets sounds, most notably the sounds composing speech.

Phonological awareness is the ability to consciously reflect or ‘tune into’ the sound system of our language.

Phonological awareness consists of many skills that are related to early reading development and others that appear to develop as a consequence of learning to read.
